Relationship Before Reliability

Reliability is not created by repeating a cue louder until the dog gives in.

It is built from understanding.

Before I ask a dog to perform reliably around distraction, I want a relationship the dog knows how to use. Can they orient back to their person? Do they understand the marker system? Can they search for an answer without falling apart? Can they recover after a mistake? Does the handler know how to make the right answer clear?

Relationship-first training is not soft or vague. It creates structure. It gives boundaries meaning because the dog also understands what works.

This is why I care about engagement before precision and connection before correction. A technically correct behavior is less useful if the dog only performs it in one room or under constant pressure.

The goal is a dog who can think with you in the middle of real life.
